Muay Thai used to be a male-dominated sport. In Singapore today, that is no longer true. Women now make up roughly 40 to 50 percent of beginner classes at most gyms, and the number has grown every year since 2020. If you are a woman considering Muay Thai, this guide covers what training is like, the questions women most often ask, and the women-only option at our sister gym Khao Ying Collective.
Why so many women are picking up Muay Thai
A few reasons it has taken off among women in Singapore specifically:
- It is a complete workout. One hour does cardio, strength, and flexibility work. Most women starting Muay Thai see body composition results within two months.
- It builds confidence. Learning to throw a hard kick or punch changes how you carry yourself. This effect is consistent across almost every woman who trains.
- It is mentally engaging. Unlike running, lifting, or pilates, every class teaches a skill. You leave feeling like you got better at something, not just more tired.
- It is practical. Self-defence value is real, even if you never spar.
- The community is supportive. Women's training communities at most Muay Thai gyms are tight. Many women say they made better friends here than at any other gym.
Is it intimidating to start as a woman
Honestly, sometimes the first class is, but rarely for the reasons people expect. The intimidation usually comes from not knowing what you are doing, not from male training partners. Most men in Muay Thai gyms are not aggressive or competitive with women. They are usually awkward and polite at first.
The real intimidation factor is the same one men face: walking into a room where everyone else seems to know what they are doing. This goes away within two or three classes.
That said, if you would feel more comfortable in a women-only space, that option exists in Singapore. We cover it at the end of this guide.
Common concerns and what is actually true
"I am not fit enough yet"
This is the most common reason women delay starting. It is also the wrong way around. Muay Thai is how you get fit. Every class scales to your level. Walking and shadow boxing are perfectly acceptable when you need to back off. You do not need a baseline.
"I will look bulky"
You will not. Muay Thai training does not build the kind of muscle mass that creates a "bulky" look. The actual outcome for almost every woman who trains consistently for six months is a leaner, more athletic body with visible muscle definition in the shoulders, calves, back, and core. Some women gain a kilo or two of lean mass. Most lose body fat. None look "bulky."
"I will get hurt"
Injury risk in Muay Thai technique class is low. Sparring is opt-in at most gyms, including Khao Noi Gym and KYC. If you never spar, your injury risk is in the same range as running or pilates. The most common minor issues for new female students are bruised shins for the first month (universal across all beginners) and tight hips from kicking before being warmed up enough. Both resolve quickly.
"I do not want to get hit in the face"
You do not have to. In a beginner class you will not get hit at all. You only get hit if and when you choose to spar, months down the line. Many women train for years and never spar, and that is a completely valid path.
"I will be the only woman in the class"
Unlikely at most Singapore gyms in 2026. Khao Noi Gym group classes are usually 30 to 50 percent female. Khao Ying Collective is 100 percent female by design.
What training looks like
A typical group class for a woman is identical to one for a man. Same warm-up, same techniques, same pad work. Coaches will sometimes pair you with a similarly sized partner if available, but mixed-size pairings work fine too. Some of our female members specifically prefer training with bigger partners because the resistance trains them to throw harder.
If you are concerned about being paired with men, ask the coach. We are happy to pair women together when there are several in a class.
What you will actually wear
Standard athletic wear works. Common choices:
- Athletic shorts or leggings
- A sports bra or fitted tank top
- A regular t-shirt over the top is optional
How fast you will progress
Female beginners progress at the same rate as male beginners. The first three months you build a stance, basic strikes, and basic conditioning. By month six you feel like a real practitioner. By year one you are competent.
There is no "women's pace" in Muay Thai. The pace is whatever the individual brings.
How Muay Thai compares to other workouts women try
Compared to common alternatives:
- vs Pilates and yoga: Muay Thai burns far more calories per hour and builds different muscle. Pilates and yoga remain excellent supplements but rarely change body composition the way Muay Thai does.
- vs Spin and HIIT classes: Muay Thai burns similar calories per hour but adds skill and engages more muscle groups.
- vs Strength training: Muay Thai builds less raw strength but better functional movement. Many women do both.
- vs Running: Muay Thai is mentally more engaging and has a lower injury rate over time for most adults. Knee and hip issues from running are far more common than equivalent issues in Muay Thai training.
The women-only option: Khao Ying Collective
For women who would prefer to train in a fully female environment, Khao Ying Collective (KYC) is our sister gym. KYC is led by Breyl, our head female coach, and offers Muay Thai group classes, private lessons, and kids classes exclusively for women and girls.
KYC suits women who:
- Want a fully female training environment
- Prefer a female head coach for personal comfort or religious reasons
